Things are starting to happen because of Sam Beard's global mindfulness project called GIFT (sambeardgift.org). Using Delaware as a model, the plan is for GIFT to spread mindfulness practice first in Delaware and then to all USA states and then the world. Here in Delaware, GIFT is starting locally and engaging all sectors: Government (fed, state, local), Education, Medical, Human Services, Non-Profits, Faith-based Organizations and Community Organizations. The GIFT project begins by first training helpers/leaders in all the sub-sectors and then moving to teaching the population. GIFT is using mindfulness (drawing from the MBSR model), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, as the guiding principle of the project (Some would call it a Movement :} ).
The intention is to spread the powerful helpfulness of mindfulness by interconnecting all the various groups -- from First-Responders to Education, Social Services, Mental Health and Medical fields. Sam proposes therefore to expand the number of people using Mindfulness in their lives. Then, with the process used in Delaware as a model ("Delaware -- The First Mindful State") GIFT will then spread its work to all the states -- and eventually the World!
With that in mind, from time to time we want to share here on mindfulvets.net how things are going for GIFT here in Delaware. To that end we'll be sharing what we learn fromDr. James Walsh who is coordinating GIFT's Delaware activities and publishes the GIFT newsletter. We will also put relevant posts/info from his newsletters here on this site. Here's one from earlier this Fall which details what's already been done in the earliest days of GIFT in Delaware -- off to a rousing start:

GIFT Starts Mindfulness Training
By Jim Walsh
GIFT has partnered with the State of Delaware's Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH) Training Office to bring Mindfulness training to Delawareans across the state. Starting in June, over 150 Delawareans have participated in GIFT’s half-day Mindfulness Based Wellness Education: An Introduction (MBWE-I) program, held throughout the summer in all 3 Delaware counties. The GIFT/DSAMH team has started its first full 8-week Mindfulness Based Wellness Education (MBWE) program, which has over 40 participants. So far the participant feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we stand poised to spread this training during the remainder of the calendar year and 2018.
....(Also) So far we've done 5 half-day workshops, and had about 180 people attend, and we're doing our second 8-week program, with about 75 people between the two. So it's safe to say we're up to 250 people who've attended GIFT mindfulness trainings. In the first six months of 2018 we have one 8-week program scheduled, 5 4-week programs (may end up being 6), 7 half-day events, and 2 all-day events. So more to come in the second half of the year for certain.
Thanks,
Jim
