Just finished reading this, thought I'd introduce it to you:
Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion
Sam Harris
2014
This is for the agnostic or atheist you know (or you if you are either of these yourself). There are 3 Harris' in the mindfulness summit. The other, Dan Harris (ABC News guy) I've already introduced his book here.
If you don’t want to read the book, we have his video in the Mindfulness Summit files, Day 12 I think.
He is more famous for his atheist works and yet he has been a meditator and studied under Tibetan masters. He approaches the subject of meditation with a logical, scientific base and asserts that what is called spirituality need not be associated with a formal religion, calling it 'secular contemplation'. He is critical of some peoples approaches to religion but to my eye not in a mocking or disrepectful manner. He's pretty witty and in his book he talks about his own journey, to include use of hallucinogens(LSD?), and serious time meditating. I'd definitely recommend this book, and the video in the mindfulness summit folders in Library here.
Here's blurb introducing him, from MIndfulness Summit:

Sam Harris is a bestselling author, neuroscientist and philosopher. He is co-founder and Chief Executive Office of Project Reason, a non-profit foundation that promotes science and secular values.
In the fall of 2014, Sam Harris gave this talk—to coincide with the publication of his book, Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion. Join Sam as he discusses a range of experiences that have traditionally been considered “spiritual”—in particular the phenomenon of self-transcendence.
Although such experiences tell us nothing about the origins of the cosmos, they confirm some well-established truths about the human mind: Our conventional sense of self is an illusion; positive emotions, such as compassion and serenity, are teachable skills; and the way we think can profoundly influence our lives and the lives of others.
This video consists of a one-hour lecture and an hour of Q&A.
