As part of the continued growth and evolution of what we call the Mindfulness Movement, the University of Massachusetts Medical School recently announced the creation of a new division. Now, alongside the traditional university divisions -- Engineering, Psychology, Sciences etc -- UMass has added a division dedicated to research on mindfulness. Mindful Magazine (mindful.org) has a nice article about it HERE.

While there are already various centers at universities and non-profit centers nationwide (including the VA), as far as I know, this is the first university to create a Division. It appears to this humble observer that this may help procure more funding into understanding the science behind mindfulness. As prominent mindfulness experts have been saying in 2017-2018, both in academic journals and book publications, while research into the power of mindfulness has been very encouraging, Mindfulness Science research is in its infancy. Also, as was discussed elsewhere here on mindfulvets.net, researchers -- and journalists who write about them -- must work hard to stay away from hyping and making broad claims about mindfulness as if it were a panacea. Having this division at UMass will hopefully only help this nascent science grow and improve.
