The Decision Aid is a free online tool available at www.ptsd.va.gov/decisionaid. Patients work at their own pace to learn about effective treatments including: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Stress Inoculation Therapy (SIT), and medications (SSRIs and SNRIs). They can watch videos explaining how the treatments work, use a grid to compare treatments they like best, and get a personalized summary.
This app, located at: www.ptsd.va.gov/apps/decisionaid/ is a great place for Vets to explore PTSD in a non-threatening way. As we Vietnam-era vets know from discussions with younger combat vets (Iraq, Afghanistan etc), for whatever reason they often don't want to get help out of some sort of manly pride thing, "I can deal with this myself" sort of thing (We know this because we were the same way at their age... :} ). With this app, a vet can follow it and explore if what they're experiencing might be PTSD, and opening the door a crack to admitting that maybe they should get help. So, my review of this app is five stars and hope we can share this with any vets we know, especially younger ones.
